Center for Companion Animal Health
Discovery Through Caring and Collaboration
| A special resource of the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University
of California, Davis, the Center for Companion Animal Health exists to improve
the health, longevity, and enjoyment of life among all species of companion
animals, including dogs, cats, birds, small mammals, exotics, and others.
It is a center in the truest sense of the word. That is, it provides a point of focus and support to a multi-disciplinary network of specialists responding to challenges in all areas of companion animal health and well-being. This network involves the School's entire faculty and clinical staff, while tapping the expertise of postgraduate interns, practicing veterinarians, and medical scholars from around the world. |

Expanding on
Excellence
![]() |
As with human patients, sometimes it's hard to figure out what's wrong. Here a CT scanner is helping to diagnose a problem with the family cat. |
The Center is, in fact, an outgrowth out of the tremendous commitment and accomplishments of these specialists. Their work is a primary reason that the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine the only veterinary school in California is recognized as one of the top schools in the nation. Working as investigative teams, they have developed an international reputation in four areas. These peaks of expertise are being further expanded upon, and they form the basis of the Center's scientific focus:
Comparative cancer
Infectious diseases
Nutrition
Medicine and surgery
Catsbuzz has been helping the Center for Companion Animal Health through Save Our Cats and Kittens (S.O.C.K.) for many years. S.O.C.K. was a nonprofit organization founded in 1974 to aid in much needed feline leukemia (FeLV) research at the University of California at Davis. S.O.C.K. also supports research on other feline diseases such as infectious peritonitis (FIP) and the T-Lymphotropic Lentivirus (FTLV), which has similarities to human AIDS. The organization has been active in finding homes for cats that have completed their service in this research. After twenty-four years of dedicated service, S.O.C.K. has turned over its work in 1998 directly to CCAH.
Catsbuzz continues its support now directly to CCAH.

SPAY USA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to controlling the unchecked
growth in the feral animal population through methods such as spaying and
neutering. The organization points out that one female cat's cumulative
offspring, if left unchecked, could multiply to 12,680 in five years and
over 80 million in ten years! There are far too many cats that must be destroyed
each year for lack of someone to care for them. Spay USA has programs that
work. They would be glad to provide information to anyone interested. Write
to SPAY USA, P.O. Box 801, Trumbull, CT 06611 U.S.A.
